What Makes a Man Run?
People
can't understand why a man runs. They don't see any sport
in it. Argue it lacks the sight and thrill of body
contact.
Yet, the conflict is there, more raw and challenging than any man versus man
competition.
For in running it is man against himself, the cruelest of opponents.
The other runners are not the real enemies. His
adversary lies within him, in his ability, with brain and heart
to master himself and his emotions.

DAN MECCA & CO TEST THROWING CAGE:
It passed with TOP grades!!! November 21st, the PSAL
Commissioner Bob Zifchak hosted an all around clinic where his coaches
watched a demonstration of the indoor weight throw led by Dan Mecca, head
coach of Manhattan College. “It’s a great set-up for great throwing, they
loved it, ” Mecca noted as his two NCAA Hammer throw finalists, Anders
Constantine of Sweden and Michael Freeman of Rhode Island put on a real show
of spirited throwing joined by Shane Messner, a visiting student from
Cornell University. Zifchak plans several demonstration events in the
weight throw for his H.S. athletes and may consider introducing it as a
scored event as interest increases.
THOUSANDS GO UNNOTICED AT VAN CORTLANDT PARK:
After a promising article the Friday before the Foot
Locker Eastern regional on defending champion Aislinn Ryan, the New York
Times failed to follow through for its readers, ignoring entirely the race
itself on Saturday despite the many thousands of spectators who flooded Van
Cortlandt Park to watch the stirring battle won by Nicole Blood of Saratoga
with Ryan, a close second. It is fair to say the Metrostars of Major League
Soccer would give their right arm to have half this number of fans at the
Meadowlands for any given game. With Cross-Country the biggest
participatory sport combining boys and girls across America, it is difficult
to understand the New York Times’ indifference. To place their interests in
context, the NCAA regional soccer match between St. John’s and Darmouth
merited a sizable article and an action photo in last weeks Times. In the
newly built St. John’s stadium for over 2,000 spectators a rabid crowd of
just 476 showed up to watch the 1-0 result. In the enigmatic world of New
York newspapers with rapidly declining circulations, is there anyone out
there still capable of doing the math?

ARMORY ALERT #2
AT THE NEW BALANCE TRACK & FIELD CENTER
AT THE ARMORY, WEST 168th STREET
* THE ARMORY IS OPEN!
Practice begins November 15th, every Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons. Over 100 track meets are scheduled this season. A new
Throwing Cage is in place, the videotron scoreboard with greater capacity is
relocated and Rob Cano Associates are redoing the concession area, which
will be open for breakfast at 7am on track meet days.
“MUSIC TO MY EARS”
The verdict is in! As long suspected by the Armory
production team, music is a major plus during competition. Dr. Costas
Karageorghis, a sports psychologist at Brunel University, has just completed
a careful study “suggesting that the right music can lift a person’s
athletic performance by as much as 20%.” Both training and competition seem
improved and famous athletes up to Haile Gebreselassie have used music to
reach greater heights. Please see the
enclosed article from “The Times:
Britain,” which was reported on public radio.
Rob Moschetta, The Armory’s “Music man,” for the past
five years is already warming up and will add to the excitement with
everything from Blues to Hip-hop to Rock and Roll, and even opera! Visit
his “Entertainment and Sounds Unlimited” website by clicking the following

THE ING NYC MARATHON GOES THE DISTANCE FOR KIDS

competing in this year’s marathon for youth runners and track & field in the
New York City area. The Armory was included in this grant and hats off to
new president Mary Wittenberg for her support of our sport.
ALERT #1
UPCOMING 2005-2006 SEASON
AT THE NEW BALANCE TRACK & FIELD CENTER
AT THE ARMORY, WEST 168th STREET
* Preseason NYRR Foundation Youth
Jamboree for youth ages four to fifteen was held Saturday October 15, 2005.
Over 1,000 entrants from throughout the NY area participated in spirited
competition throughout the day. The next Jamboree will be January 15, 2006
sponsored by NY Presbyterian Hospital and March 26, 2006 sponsored by the
ING-NYC Marathon. All young runners are welcome.
Despite the unrelenting rain the 33rd
Manhattan H.S. X-C Invitational was its usual great success. Thanks to New
Balance, the NYRR, the U.S. Marine Corps, Parks Dept., the NYC Sports
Commission and the new collaboration with the Armory Foundation, the meet
has reached a new level. Meet Director Ed Bowes is considering electronic
scoring for the 2006 meet where he expects a record 12,000 entrants.
Adam Nelson, the World Shot Put
Champion at Helsinki has accepted an offer to inaugurate the new “Throwing
Cage” at the Armory. The ceremonial throwing out the “First Ball” will be
during the New Balance Collegiate Invitational February 4, 2006 at 1pm.
Coach Nick McDonough at NYU has
finalized his feature section for the January 13, 2006 Friday night NYC
Gotham Cup. Villanova and Lincoln University of Philadelphia are newly on
board for what will be a great addition to the Friday Night College T&F
Series at the Armory, which begins January 6, 2006 with the Fordham Kickoff
Classic and runs to late February. Invitations to NYU greats Gary Gubner,
Irv “Moon” Mondschein and the family of late Larry Ellis should bring an
enthusiastic group of NYU T&F alumni back to the Armory for a memorable
event on January 13, 2006.
Armory updates will now appear weekly
as the season approaches. Practice begins at the Armory November 15, 2005.
To date over 100 T&F meets are scheduled for this 2005-2006 season.
