Eligibility: The Easterns are open to all scholastic teams.
Origin: This is the 78th running of the Eastern States Championships, first held at the old Madison Square Garden in 1934. It was contested in The Armory from 1966 to 1972, but moved to New Jersey after that. It returned to New York and The Armory in 1997.
Enduring Moment: Both Carl and Carol Lewis set long jump records at the Eastern States championships. Carl’s record of 25-5 1/2 was broken by Dion Bentley in 1989 (26-0 3/4), but Carol’s 1980 mark (20-6 1/4) remains.
