A Korir Year?
Iona College senior Leonard Korir continues his roll. After claiming NCAA national titles at both the indoor (5k) and outdoor championships (10k), the native Kenyan is going for his own version of a 2011 three-peat.
He opened the season on Saturday at the Brother Doyle Meet of Championships, hosted by Iona in Van Cortlandt Park, and did so in impressive fashion. He won easily, finishing eight kilometers in 24:27.95, nearly 30 seconds ahead of his competition, which in this case was teammate Mitch Goose. The Gaels — ranked fourth nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association — had the first four runners and claimed an easy team victory with 19 points. The Brown Bears were second with 64.
Korir will ultimately be aiming for the NCAA cross country title in the fields of the Wabash Family Center in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 21. Last year he was fourth in the title race, 20 seconds behind Liberty's Sam Chelanga.
The Iona women also won at the Meet of Champions, but it was a far closer chase as just five points separated the top three teams. The Gaels — with champion Hollie Rowland — were first with 84 points, followed by Penn (86) and Brown (89).
Korir wasn't the only star to shine at VCP on Saturday as Bronxville sophomore Mary Cain was an easy winner at the Villa Bears Invitational and Don Bosco Prep senior Christian Costello legged out a narrow margin of victory in the Regis Invitational.
