Stuyvesant, Bronx Science Sweep Titles
The PSAL Borough Championships are being contested throughout Gotham and throughout the week.
The boys' and girls' teams from Stuyvesant High dominated the Manhattan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. The boys swept the top three places on Tuesday as Mark Schramm, Konrad Surkont and Jack Stevenson practically crossed the line together in 17:30. The squad's 17:54 average was the best of the day as it beat LaGuardia, 21-48.
On Wednesday, the Stuy girls won with 39 points, ahead of Health Professions & Human Services (76) and Laguardia (78). Fabiola Oubida of HPHS was the top individual finisher in 20:38.1, nearly a minute ahead of the competition.
Moving to the Bronx Championships, also held at Vanny, Bronx Science swept the titles. On Tuesday, Adam Yohanan led Science to victory in 18:06, just edging Truman's Ramaro Bowes. Bronx Science then captured the next five places to score a mere 19 points. American Studies was second with 69 points.
On Wednesday, Lea Legardeur won individually (21:58.7) to lead Science to the girls' title as well. Scoring 29 points, the girls from Bronx Science beat out Dewitt Clinton (55), which had second-place finisher Brittney Adams.
Queens held its championships at Cunningham Park and Michael Delligatti of Francis Lewis won the boys' title on Tuesday. Delligatti broke the tape in 16:49.9 to lead his mates to a 39-74 win over Newtown.
Among the Queens' girls there were both a blowout and a nailbiter. As expected, Cardozo's sensational Alexis Panisse finished in just 18:06.2, more than a minute-and-a-half faster than anyone else and nearly 2:30 ahead of everyone except teammate Sabrina Southerland. But Cardozo had to sweat out the team victory, 26-29, over Townsend Harris. Those two schools accounted for the entire top 10.
Staten Island and Brooklyn Champs will be determined at VCP on Saturday.
