2012-13 Armory Schedule

posted on 9/5/2012

You could search the globe and — and in terms of providing competition to all ages — you'd find nothing like The Armory. The release of the 2012-13 Armory schedule proves the point.

In all there are more than 100 'sessions' at The Armory this season, but the pace is of particular note. The traditional Armory season begins with the kickoff event — the PSAL Pilgrim Games on Sun., Nov. 25 — and ends with the conclusion of the New Balance Indoor Nationals on Sun., March 10.

That 106-day span features 74 competition days as well as 95 sessions. And on the vast majority of the 32 days in that span without an actual competition, rest assured that folks of all ages and abilities be taking to the track to practice and improve for the competitions ahead.

"During the winter season, the New Balance Track & Field Center in The Armory is one of the busiest places in this amazing city," said Armory Foundation Executive Director Norb Sander. "Be it development meets for youth, fun-filled events for adults or the glitzy 106th Millrose Games, The Armory will be open for business and prepared to fulfill its mission."

Along with the traditional mega high school invitationals for which The Armory is known, the New Balance Nationals (March 8-10) will again bring together high schoolers for a true national championship.

The nation's largest collegiate indoor meet — the 2,800-competitor Armory Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 1-2 — will host team and individual national contenders. Many of the stars of that event will ultimately compete in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the College Invitational is certainly a required destination for all true track fans.

But the highlight of the season will be the 106th Millrose Games on Feb. 16. Last year's Millrose — the first at The Armory — was credited with re-energizing New York's signature track & field event. Stars like Sanya Richards-Ross, Bernard Lagat, Jesse Williams, Jenny Simpson and LaShawn Merritt gave chase to history and put on an electrifying and intimate show for the sell-out crowd.

"The demand will again be great for reserved seating, but we will once again — particularly for the high school qualifiers — be sure to have reasonably-price tickets available for their supporters," said Dr. Sander. Millrose Games tickets will go on sale later this month, but a large pool will be held for sale after the Millrose Trials on Wed., Jan. 16.

One new event for The Armory is the Colgate Women's Games slated for Sat., Feb. 23. That event will turn 40 years old this winter and it is a perfect match for The Armory. It is nation's largest amateur track series open to all girls from elementary school through college. Its designed to provide competition to help young girls and women "develop a strong sense of personal achievement, self-esteem, instill the importance of education and provide a training ground for those who might not otherwise participate in an organized sport."
