Barrett: High Jump, High GPA
Back in late May, Jack Pfeifer, the Director of College Track & Field at The Armory, caught up with University of Arizona sophomore Brigetta Barrett and wrote that she "may be America’s next great female high jumper."
Keep in mind, she is just 20 years old, but Pfeifer's prediction may have come true sooner than anyone expected as she is heading to the IAAF World Championships as the U.S. national champion after clearing a personal-best 1.95 meters (6-4 3/4) at the USATF Nationals in Eugene, Ore., in June. Click here for an excited Barrett talking about representing the U.S.
Now Barrett, a Bronx-born former New York State champion at Roy C. Ketcham High in Dutchess County, has picked up another honor. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named her as one of four female Scholar Athletes of the Year, joining Oregon's Jordan Hasay, Villanova's Sheila Reid and Northwestern State's Trecey Rew.
A theater arts major, Barrett carries a 3.61 grade-point average at UA and she has been known to sing (Check out her rendition of Etta James' At Last).
We'll be keeping a close eye on Barrett as she heads to Daegu, South Korea, for the World Championships later in the month and we are hopeful that she can at least match this performance:
