D-III Takes The Stage

by Tim Fulton — posted on 11/9/2011

With the high school cross country season winding down and the college application season in full swing, many athletes are probably trying to determine if they've run their final cross country race. What they might not realize is that many schools, including locally in New York and New Jersey, would love to have them. New York State is a hotbed for NCAA Division III Cross Country and the NCAA Atlantic Regional will take place Saturday in Canton, N.Y.

With that in mind ArmoryTrack.com talked to SUNY New Paltz assistant coach Justin Harris, who ran for both John Jay High in East Fishkill and Marist College in Poughkeepsie. A member of the national champion 4x800m team in high school, a team that set The Armory record of 7:46 in 2002, Harris is also now a professional triathlete.

SUNY New Paltz — under Mike Trunkes' direction — hosted the SUNYAC Championships two weeks ago at Bowdoin Park for the first time. Geneseo — ranked in the top 10 nationally — won both the men's and women's crowns. NYU is also ranked nationally both for the men and women while St. Lawrence and SUNY Cortland are in the top 30 on the men's side.

Below are the current Atlantic Region rankings as managed by the USTFCCCA.
