The NYS Title Hunt
Eighty-two teams will toe the line this weekend at the NYSPHSAA Championships in Vernon, N.Y. Many are making return trips to this meet, but no one has sent more than Dan Doherty — who now has won 33 straight Sectional Championships with the Pearl River girls.
The longest winning streak on the boys' side is owned by Warwick Valley, under coaches Mike Potter and Tim St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence started the 12-year winning streak before retiring and handing the reins to Potter, one of his former charges.
Seventeen schools will be sending both a boys' and girls' squad to the meet. They are Beaver River, Beekmantown, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Burnt Hills, Clarence, East Aurora, Fayetteville-Manlius, Friends Academy, Geneseo, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Ithaca, Pearl River, Saranac, Seton Catholic, Southold and Wayland Cohocton.
New York is one of the deepest states in the country for cross country, yet only nine teams will be competing in Class A since neither Sections 7 or 10 have any large schools. Section 8 will not be sending a team in Class D since they have no small schools in the heavily-populated Nassau County.
