Princeton Prevails In The Bronx
All-American Donn Cabral of Princeton opened his senior season with a dominating performance at the Fordham Fiasco in Van Cortlandt Park, finishing more than 12 seconds clear of the field. His team beat Navy, 26-41, for the title as 12 Orange and Black runners finished among the top 23.
One of those was freshman Eddie Owens, who was a standout for Packer Collegiate last year. Only Cabral was faster than Owens, who completed the five-mile course in 25:42.43. Cabral's time was 25:30.37. Navy's Cody Rome was third followed by Fordham's own Julian Saad, whose team finished tied with NYU for fifth overall (out of 16 teams). On the women's side of the aisle, the No. 22 Tigers won the team title, but the Yale Bulldogs were in closer pursuit than had been expected. Yale — which had the first two collegiate finishers — had 43 points to Princeton's 34.
"We are in a great starting spot for the season and I'm very pleased with the women's perfomance," said Bulldog coach Amy Gosztyla. "It's going to be an exciting fall."
The winner was Millie Chapman, who completed her run in 18:03.63. Teammate Jacque Sahlberg was the second collegian across the finish line, just behind open runner Melissa Salerno of New Balance. Fourth was Penn junior Leslie Kovach followed by Princeton's first finisher, Clare Gallagher. Click here for the full women's results.
