Fifth Ave Mile

Strolling Down 5th Avenue

The Fifth Avenue Mile, which showcases the world's best milers in the shadow of Central Park, is nearing capacity as the event is barely a month away. Slated for Sept. 24, the race starts on Fifth near East 80th Street — in the midst of the Museum Mile — and heads straight south to East 60th Street.

The NYRR website says, "This iconic event is also an opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities to compete over the mile distance on a beautiful, fast, and fun course. Come out and show your stuff, or cheer your friends, family, and teammates from the sidelines!"

The race — which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this fall — has been won by runners from 12 different countries. In fact, the men's race has had winners with six different nationalities in the last six years.

Flynn, O'Sullivan, and Coghlan

One of the event's winners — Ireland's Frank O'Mara — also made mile history 26 years ago Wednesday when he teamed with countrymen Eamonn Coghlan, Marcus O'Sullivan and Ray Flynn to post a 4 x mile relay record of 15:49.08, which still stands today. The order and splits for the race, which was run at Dublin's Belfield Stadium, were Coghlan (4:00.2), O'Sullivan (3:55.3), O'Mara (3:55.6) and Flynn (3:57.0).

That group continues to have ties to The Armory as Flynn is now the meet director for the Millrose Games and O'Sullivan's Villanova Wildcats compete here often. Coghlan, the famed Chairman of the Boards, won seven Wanamaker Miles at Millrose. Those three are pictured together on the right.
