AT&T Athletes of the Week, Vol. 5

Michael Cherry, who ventured from Chesapeake, Va., to compete in the Hispanic Games, found the trip certainly worthwhile. The Oscar Smith High senior earned AT&T Athlete of the Week honors by winning both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. His 48.08 winning time in the 400 was the fastest run on a 200-meter oval this season. An Ohio runner clocked a slightly faster time with the benefit of an oversized track. After that victory, Cherry came back to win the 200 in 21.83, little more than a tenth of a second off the fastest mark in the U.S.

The 800-meter run is an event that requires a combination of speed and strategy and Kellenberg sophomore Jazmine Fray used both in abundance at the Hispanic Games to earn AT&T Athlete of the Week honors. Cardozo's Sabrina Southerland made a strong run through the first half of the race, but was passed by Gwynedd Mercy's Emma Keenan. Fray held tight and passed Keenan in the final 100 meters and won going away with a time of 2:10.96, the fastest in the nation this season.
