Going Batty Over Miles' Mile
Tape-delay can never deliver like this.
BYU's Miles Batty had traveled to New York City by himself with the goal of becoming the one to finally become the first collegian to run a mile under 3:55. The last three years have seen a remarkable surge in the event at the collegiate level and Arizona's Lawi Lalang had just missed the mark the week before.
Well, Batty did it. He was the first college runner across the line, less than a second behind winner Matthew Centrowitz. If you need to know, Batty's time was 3:54.54.
Across the country, his teammates — who were there to compete in the Husky Invitational at the University of Washington — set up two laptops in an overcrowded hotel room to watch the Wanamaker unfold on ArmoryTrack's production of the Millrose Games.
Coach Ed Eyestone caught the reaction on his cell phone and itllustrates so many of the great things that sport can engender, but namely the devotion that teammates have for one another. BYU's middle distance runner Ryan Waite put the video online and Flotrack's Ryan Fenton, who was the primary interviewer on the webcast, was the first to tell the story. When Fenton posted it, he wrote that it almost made him cry.
This video also demonstrates the power of the internet and the emerging ability for us to deliver these kinds of moments beyond our famed building. We hope everyone enjoyed it.
Maybe not as much as the BYU team did.
