A City Miler

It's been 14 years since a PSAL athlete ran in the boys' high school mile at the Millrose Games, so Stuyvesant coach Mark Mendes knows that "this is a big deal."

The big deal is that his star — Konrad Surkont — qualified for the race with a 4:16.31 clocking in the Stanner Games, thus fulfilling his goal for the indoor season.

“It was a huge goal coming into the season,” Surkont told Julian Garcia of the New York Daily News. “It’s a huge, huge meet for any high school distance runner, and I knew it would be a huge deal to do it. But I think if you put your work in, it can happen for you, and it did for me.”

Interestingly, Coach Mendes coached the last PSAL miler at Millrose — Roberto (Pacho) Velez of Hunter College High back in 1998. His latest star, Surkont, is considering Yale, Harvard and Princeton as the next stop in his academic and athletic career.
