Section 1 Championships — Pawling boys over Bronxville
Who says a seventh man doesn't count? The Pawling boys used strong sixth and seventh boys to displace Bronxville's fifth man and win a battle of the top two teams in NYSPHSAA Class C. The North Rockland girls edged Suffern, 56-59, even though Suffern placed 1-2 overall in the race. The Pearl River girls won their 33rd straight Sectional title by dominating the Class B race. Bronxville girls won their 15th straight.
Section 2 Championships — Burnt Hills over Holy Names
The closest race of the day was the girls' Class B battle between Holy Names and Burnt Hills. BH was down six points through the top three, but swept places 8-9-10-11 to seal the race by a 35-43 count. The Saratoga girls looked great and scored an easy 22 points for the win. The Shaker boys also return to the state meet with a 29-61 win over 'Toga.
Section 3 Championships — FM boys & girls both go sub-20
While FM winning both titles is no surprise, it's still so impressive. Nick Ryan won the boys' title in 15:34 while Jillian Fanning won the girls' in 18:01 with Laura Leff of West Genesee placing second in 18:19. Holland-Patent won the boys Class C title in one of the most anticipated races statewide, beating Hannibal, 74-91.
Section 4 Championships — Delhi beats Thomas Edison
A classic back-and-forth battle in Class D netted Delhi the one-point win.
Section 5 Championships — Canandaigua girls dominate tough field, including R-H
Coming into the meet this was expected to be a super-close girls' race, but Canandaigua just brought its 'A' game and dominated the field by placing 1-3-5-16-17. The boys of Rush-Henrietta averaged 16:07 in winning the Class A title, 23-100, over Victor.
The boys' Class B title went to Honeoye Falls-Lima (57) as it beat Pittsford Mendon (63), Brighton (64) and Sutherland (76). HFL is one of NY's top programs year after year and it seems to round into shape just in time to steal the win.
Section 6 Championships — East Aurora wins again
Section 7 Championships — Beekmantown boys down Peru
Section 8 Championships — North Shore girls, Port Washington boys claim titles
The North Shore girls, led by seniors Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud nearly hand-in-hand across the finish, did the expected with an easy win. Along with Nadel and Nerud going 1-2, juniors Jessica Donohue and Elizabeth Caldwell were 4-5. For the boys, Port Washington had three in the top 10, including a 2-3 finish from senior Taylor Titcomb and junior Sadharth Kakkar to score an impressive victory.
Section 9 Championships — Warwick boys win 12th straight title
Warwick continued the longest boys' Sectional winning streak in the state with a win at Bear Mountain by sweeping the top four places. The New Paltz boys edged Port Jervis, 55-56, despite being outscored by 15 points on their fifth man. Monroe-Woodbury wins, 56-63 over Warwick Valley, in the girls A race as a better 3-4-5 was the difference here. Tri-Valley won the girls Class C title over Sullivan West, 52-56, as it picked up seven points from its last two girls.
Section 10 Championships — Tupper Lake boys edge Norwood-Norfolk
Section 11 Championships — Shoreham Wading River wins on tiebreaker
Shoreham Wading River's Jack Kelly edged Harborfield's Connor Pulvidente for 19th place — 18:05-18:09 — and secured his team the win on a rare sixth-man tiebreaker after both teams scored 47 points.
