Wisconsin Byrnes It Up
Things went mostly as expected today at the NCAA Division I Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. After all, Arizona freshman Lawi Lalang and Villanova senior Sheila Reid — both prohibitive favorites — claimed national titles. And Wisconsin's pack running paid off with a men's national team title for former Iona Coach Mick Byrne.
But the unexpected took place in the chase for the women's team title as prohibitive favorite Florida State couldn't grab the glory, finishing fourth in a close team battle. The 2011 champions? The Georgetown Hoyas, coached by Chris Miltenberg, a former Columbia assistant. Washington's 170 points were just behind the Hoyas' 162 and ahead of both Reid's Wildcats (181) and the Seminoles (189).
It was the first national title for Georgetown and the fifth for Wisconsin.
Locally, Iona's Leonard Korir was third overall, leading the Gaels to a ninth-place team finish. For the women, Columbia's Waverly Neer (40th) was the first freshman across the line. Among NYS high school runners, Penn State's Caitlin Lane (Greenwich) was 16th and Syracuse's Patrick DuPont (Fairfield) was 37th.
