The boys 4x400 always provides excitement and this year was no different. Newburgh (right) won the race as everyone else (right) battled for smooth handoffs behind them.

Meet Preview - updated 3/01

With 10 National Leaders entered and a slew of top fives, this could be one of the best NY State Meets ever.

By Tim Fulton Where do you begin when looking at the NYS Championships, which will be held Sunday, March 6th at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome? Well, I guess that depends on what kind of track and field fan you are. For most people, one of the most anticipated rematches of the year will occur in the girls 3000m run, where Warwick’s Aislinn Ryan will battle Saratoga’s Nicole Blood. Currently, these two are ranked one and two in the country (9:36.6 and 9:43.92) and have had many epic battles over the last year, with Ryan winning the Great American, Footlocker Finals, Millrose, and Boston Indoor Games and Blood winning the NYS XC Class A and Federation (open) title, the Footlocker NE race, Manhattan College in (in record fashion by the way - first girl under 14:00) as well as both the indoor and outdoor State 3000m titles last year. Heading into the race these two girls have combined for the 4 fastest 3000m times by a NYS junior girl ever. Could Molly Huddle’s 9:31.97 state record be in jeopardy? If the girls can overcome the rather slow track, we could see something special. (Note: Blood hasn't lost the 3000m state title, indoors or out, since spring of 2002 when Huddle ran 9:21). How about the girls 1000m run, where we could see a new National freshman class record. Top seed Mary Liz McCurdy (Bayshore), who has won the last two titles, will have her hands full in freshmen Kristen Reese (Carmel) and Caitlin Lane (Saratoga). Reese ran 2:53.42 to qualify on a 200m flat, Mondo track while Lane ran 2:55.02 at U. Albany’s short, square track. McCurdy’s best time of 2:50.74 was run at the Armory’s banked, Mondo surface at the Stanner Games. She also ran 4:52.87 to win the New Balance Games mile and qualify for the Millrose Games, where she finished 9th, one spot ahead of Reese. Reese had run 4:57.27 for the mile at the Hispanic Games to earn her spot. Lane was one of four Saratoga girls to qualify for Footlocker Nationals, where she finished 38th, and currently has the fastest 1500m time in the country at 4:33.4. Ellen Dougherty (Riverhead) could be the sleeper in the event. Seeded 7th at 2:58.49, Dougherty placed 2nd last year in 2:50.99. Many of the top girls are staying away from the 1500m to make sure they are ready for the 4x800m relay (Blood, Ryan, Lane, Ferguson), so you would think the 1500m might be a little weak. Not a chance. With Bronxville’s Amanda Hudson, who busted out a 4:35.20 1500m on Sunday to beat Kara McKenna (4:39.77) at the Section 1 Qualifier, and Bellport’s Brittany Sheffey, the race could produce the nations fastest time. Sheffey has run 4:37.09 for 1500m and 4:55.39 for the mile. Sheffey was in the race at Millrose and was the AOC freshman mile champion last spring. She also set a new national sophomore class record in the 1000m (2:49.48) at the Armory Collegiate Jr. 1000m, and placed 2nd in the 800m at Easterns in 2:09. And don’t forget Sacred Heart’s Rolanda Bell with season best’s of 4:37.43 and 4:58.30. Could the meet record of 4:29.55 by be in jeopardy?

NY State is one of the only states to contest the racewalk in it's state championships and this year's match up is a good one. Bayshore's Brittany O'Brien takes on rival Kate Cannon from Somers. These two own the two fastest times in the country thus far this year when they battled to a 1-2 finish at the Hispanic Games. These two also raced to a 4-5 finish last spring at AOC. Thrown in Rachel Gill from East Meadow, and it should be a 3 way battle for the title and a could be a preview of nationals.

The girls 4x800m should provide some finishing power to the meet. Bayshore, Suffern, Boys and Girls, and Saratoga are all expected to vie for the title. It will be a bit of a rematch for the first three from one of the best races ever – the Armory Collegiate Invitational. That’s where Boys and Girls, Bayshore, and Suffern finished 1-2-3 in 9:04.29, 9:04.51, 9:06.16 – times that rank them 1-2-3 in the US this year and 3-4-5 all time. Saratoga’s best time is their 9:20.69 from Brown in 12/28 which ranks them US#5, but all of their top runners were held out of the 1500m to be ready for the relay.

Let's not forget about the National Record Holder in the pole vault, Mary Saxer (Lancaster). Saxer became the first HS girl ever to clear 14'00" at Dartmouth on January 8th and she is also ranked 9th in the US in the long jump, where she is the defending National (NSIC) Champion.

The boys 1000m is another event that seems to have people talking. Luis German (Southampton) and Ben White (Liverpool) are the top two seeds, but the question remains, will Lionel Williams make the seeded section? Williams is the national freshman and sophomore class record holder in the 600m but he is seeded 10th at 2:36.54. With 28 kids entered in the meet, this could be an issue. (note: Somers Alex Bean has scratched out with an injury, so Williams should move into the #9 spot)

The boys 600m doesn't have Lionel Williams, but it does have Justin Craddock from Kenmore East. Craddock ran 1:20.85 on RIT's track, which isn't the fastest around. Could Brad Sumner's (McQuaid - 1989) meet record of 1:19.56 be in danger? I'd say so.

The boys 300m has three guys seeded within 2 tenths of a seconds. Elvis Lewis, Kim Williams, and Randy Dawkins are seeded at 34.30, 34.52, and 34.58. All of the top 5 seeds were run at the Armory, but #6 seed Terence Collins from Liverpool ran his 35.57 a the Constantino Invit at Manley Field House's 200m flat track, so he could be a sleeper.

Two of the nations top milers will match up in the 1600m asKevin Tschirart (Northport) will battle Shenendehowa's Dan McManamon. Both have run under 4:15.3 for the full mile. North Rockland's Carlos Jamieson could be in the mix as he was also in the Millrose Games, and Geary Gubbins (Southampton) has gone 4:18.71 for the mile and are ranked in the top 4 in the US.

The boys 4x400m matches National powers Newburgh (US#1) vs. Sheepshead Bay (US#4). Newburgh had planned to run the 4x200 as well, but they were DQ'd at their qualifier, so now they can focus on the 4x400. The NYS Record of 3:17.49 by Southshore in 2001 could be in danger as, and so could their meet record of 3:18.22, as Newburgh comes in with a season best time of 3:17.82. Sheepshead Bay has a 3:20.72 to their credit, though they are running the 4x200 as well.

The boys 4x800m relay matches US#1 and National record holders Syosset against upstate rival Shaker, who is US#2 and ranked 3rd all time. These two squared off in the Armory Collegiate Invitational HS 4x800m and it was magic. Syosset broke the national record with their 7:42.22 while Shaker crossed in 7:43.86, the 3rd best ever. It looks like Shaker is running both the 4x4 and the 4x8 and rumor is they have had some injury problems, so who knows what could happen. Look for Warwick Valley to to sneak into 2nd in Shaker isn't 100%, or maybe even Kellenberg.

As you can see, I'm more of a distance fan, but check the lists below for the top seeds in the sprints and jumps, and you'll see some events that should have some great drama.

Bronxville's Amanda Hudson is the top seed in the 1500m run.

Carmel Freshman Kristen Reese has a chance to break the national freshman class record in the 1000m. (2:52.84)

North Rockland's John Martinez should be battling

Chaminade's Kevin McDermott for the 3200m title.

Tappan Zee's John Hickey will be shooting for the state title and the meet record of 64'11.5"
