What Makes a Man Run?

People can't understand why a man runs.  They don't see any sport in it.   Argue it lacks the sight and thrill of body contact.

Yet, the conflict is there, more raw and challenging than any man versus man competition.

For in running it is man against himself, the cruelest of opponents.
The other runners are not the real enemies.  His adversary lies within him, in his ability, with brain and heart to master himself and his emotions.

- Glenn Cunningham

Results/News - Week #10 (1/30-2/05)

Week 10 Highlights

This week was all about The Millrose Games and the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

Friday night at Madison Square Garden saw seven NY boys and 5 NY girls toe the line with 7 other runners to see who could handle the short track the best.  Shenendehowa's Dan McManamon won the boys race while NJ star Danielle Tauro took the girls race in a thrilling coming from behind victory.  Fordam Prep took their 5th straight CHSAA 4x800 title, holding off Farrell down the stretch.  The PSAL and Suburban 4x400's gave plenty of local kids a chance to shine at the Garden.

Saturday at the Collegiate Invitational was time for the relays to do their thing again.  The Shaker boys, last year's NSIC 4x800m Champions, took over the US#1 spot with their 7:52.63, holding off Farrell who finished with them in 7:52.91.

www.wingedfootfotos.com

The Suffern girls ran the 3rd fastest time in the history of the US with their 9:03.36 4x800m time.  Kara McKenna and Shelby Greaney had both run the Millrose Mile so one has to wonder just how close to the National record of 8:53 they can get.

Uniondale won the girls 4x200m after a DQ by Eleanor Roosevelt and their 1:39.88 time was good enough for the US#1 ranking.  Dematha Catholic's 3:16.39 ranks them #4 All time in the US.

NJ HS star Craig Forys ran 4:09.77 in the open mile Saturday, the 3rd best ever for a HS junior.  Nicole Blood, running one of her last races as a NY resident (family is moving to California) ran 4:46.82, the fastest in the US this season.

The Uniondale girls completed a great weekend on Sunday.  After they won the Millrose Games on Friday and the Collegiate Invit on Saturday, they pulled out the Section 8 Class A Team Championships on Sunday.  Congrats.

The team championships have started and the big meets are still on the horizon.  It's been a very mild winter in lower NY which could mean some great performance down the road.

Results - Week #9 (1/23-29)

In case you missed these highlights

Shenendehowa's Dan McManamon ran 4:10.72 for the mile in Boston making him the 2nd fastest NY prepster ever behind only the legendary John Trautman's 4:07.61 time from 1986.  The race was the deepest HS mile ever run in the US with the top 9 runners all breaking 4:14.

Oh - by the way - Nicole Blood beat Aislinn Ryan in the BIG with a 4:51 time.  Ryan made a huge kick on the last lap but came up just a little short.  Lindsey Ferguson was 3rd and Hannah Davidson 5th.

At the Armory on Saturday, Transit Tech's Clemore Henry ran 33.91 for the 300m in the finals of the Mayor's Cup meet.  The Collegiate boys won the team title behind the strength of their distance squad taking 4 of the top 5 places in the 3200m and winning the 4x800m relay.  The Dewitt Clinton girls took the team title over Tilden.                                             http://www.photorun.net

Section 2 had their league championships in what has been called the deepest region for distance runners in the country.  The Saratoga girls and Colonie boys took the team titles in the Suburban Council.                    Sunday at The Armory saw the CHSAA teams come in for Sectional Championships.  The NY Sectional saw Mount St. Michael best Farrell and Fordham Prep to win the title as 4 meet records were broken at the storied meet.  Lionel Williams set a new NYS Jr. Class record in the 600m when he ran 1:20.03.

The Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA Champs saw Molloy claim another crown led by their always strong field events.  Darius Sileikis throws 53'8.5 in the shot and Dylan Dombrowski jumps 44'.5 and 14'8 in the Triple Jump and Pole Vault.

Scroll through the results for coverage of almost 40 meets from across NY State.

The Armory remembers

Officer Shawn Carson

Most of you have heard the recent news about the tragic death of Officer Shawn Carson, a member of the Jersey City Police Department.  He died along with his partner, Officer Robert Nguyen, when their patrol car plunged off a fog-shrouded drawbridge into the Hackensack River.

Officer Carson was well known for his coaching, running, and volunteer work with the Gladiators Track Club of Hudson County.  Club President Jesse Jackson praised Carson's ability to coach runners and remembered him as a spirited runner and for the many hours he spent as a club volunteer.

People like Shawn Carson are rare and he will be missed by all of us in the running community.
