GLICKMAN AWARD

2006 Application (.pdf)

Thank you for your interest in the 2006 New Balance Marty Glickman Award.  Established in 1999, this annual award pays homage to the great athlete, legendary sports broadcaster and humanitarian Marty Glickman.

Through this award, New Balance will present a total of $15,000 to two high school track and field programs located throughout New York and New Jersey. The winning team will receive a $10,000 scholarship and the runner up will receive a $5,000 scholarship. If the high school has both a boys and girls track and field team, the teams will split the money equally.  The winning teams will be judged upon a set of criteria based on combined athletic and academic performance, community activity, school spirit and intended use and will be selected by a blue-ribbon panel of running community VIPs and sportscasters.  The recipients of the annual New Balance Marty Glickman Award will be presented during the New Balance Games on January 21, 2006 at the Armory Track and Field Center in Upper Manhattan.

A New York native, Mr. Glickman was a Hall-of-Fame sports broadcaster who was the mentor for top sports announcers, including Bob Costas and Brent Musberger.  Prior to his broadcasting career, Glickman was a standout runner, as well as an All-East halfback at Syracuse University, and a member of the 1936 Olympic 4 x 100-meter team.  Unfortunately, Glickman never had the chance to compete in 1936 because Jews were banned from the Games being hosted by Germany.  The United States Olympic Committee presented Glickman with a plaque to recognize the fact that he was denied his place on the gold medal sprint relay team because he was Jewish.

Marty Glickman cited his achievements at Brooklyn’s James Madison High School as the springboard to his future successes.  During both his junior and senior year, he was the indoor and outdoor City and State Champion in the 100-yard dash, as well as the National Scholastic Sprint Champion in his senior year.  A well-rounded athlete, Glickman also led Madison’s football team to an undefeated season and the City and State Championship titles during his senior year.

New Balance is proud to support young runners of today who exemplify the spirit and athleticism of Marty Glickman.  Past award recipients have used the scholarship funds to secure new training equipment or expand their competition schedule, among other things.
