Based on the performances in the
Freshman/Sophomore Championships, some
slight changes in the rankings.
1. St.Anthony's
2. St. John Villa
3. Sacred Heart
4. Kellenberg
5. St. Francis Prep
6. Bishop Loughlin
7. Archbishop Molloy
8. St. John the Baptist
9. St. Joseph by-the-Sea
10. Bishop Kearney
11. Holy Trinity
12. Notre Dame
13. St. Joseph Hill
14. Christ the King
15. St. John's Prep
Does anyone dare make a prediction
about this CHSAA championship meet? A lot
of ifs here. If
St. Anthony's moves up a freshman or two, and if they run well, and get
a true leader, they can win...If Villa can dig down for an effort like
last year's, they can win...If Sacred Heart, Kellenberg, and St. John
the Baptist find legitimate backscorers...If Loughlin, perhaps the most
talented team, decides to take the meet seriously...If St. Francis and
Molloy continue to improve...then we have a barnburner.
The feeling here is that Villa and St.
Anthony's will battle it out again for the title. Sacred Heart looks
good for third. Places four through eight could be a real scramble,
while St. Joseph by-the-Sea, Bishop Kearney, and Notre Dame look a cut
below the top eight. We'll
venture a guess, but caution- this is not an ex cathedra prediction. \
Winning score should be
in the 90 range.

The top three teams once again seem to be
separating themselves from the
pack. Or is it four? Or only two? It's been a strange season in that
none of
the top teams has shown real consistency. And there is little to choose
from
in the league from positions 5 through 12. Once again, it seems to be
that
it's a case of who is on that day.
This may not be the best year in terms of
quality teams, but it makes for an
exciting and competitive CHSAA championship in two weeks.

Some strange developments the week before
championship time, or is it
strange? Re-emerging are Loughlin and St. Francis. Villa fourth in
championship at Brown. St.Anthony's is non-championship race, but still
close to Villa, performance-wise. And was that just a hiccup for Sacred
Heart? There are now seven teams battling for the state qualifying
spots.
Should be a great competitive month of cross country ahead, and nothing
beats a CHSAA championship meet.

week
ending October 13.
We thought that this would be the week that
everything began to sort itself out. Heavy rain and the SATs put all
those thoughts to rest. Maybe we have to wait until the Sectionals (Oct.
26) to really find out who's who. In the meantime, we'll give
Villa the No. 1 spot, based on the fact that they were the top CHSAA
team at Manhattan. St. Anthony's again split their team, while Sacred
Heart and Kellenberg ran their top athletes in underclass races. We
thought there were three teams in the mix for the CHSAA title next
month, but it now appears that Kellenberg has drawn closer to the top.

ending October 6.
Still a dogfight at the top, with St. John
Villa placing second at the Red
Flash Invite in western Pa. Sacred Heart fifth at St. Anthony's. St.
Anthony's still running some of their top girls in sophomore races.
We'll give Sacred Heart and Villa the top spot, with St. Anthony's a
close
third.
There are still many teams holding out runners. It should make more
sense
this weekend at Manhattan, as everyone should start getting serious.

Sacred heart took a big step toward top
ranking, with one point win at Nazareth. St. Anthony's, however, had
part of their team at Sunken Meadow. We'll go with the Friars one more
week, but not by much. Molloy junior Natalie Lebron is not competing for
her school, and has opted for club competition. In the past she has run
for the same club (Starlets) as Rakibat Abiola, who is sitting out
interscholastic cross country after her transfer to Tottenville. There seems to be a significant
drop after the first three teams.

With more teams competing, the "read"
is better, but not perfect. Still some teams missing, and some top
individuals yet to compete.
1- St. Anthony's- but not by much.
2. St. John Villa- top three rounding into form means trouble for
league.
3. Sacred Heart- starting to show.
4. Kellenberg- not bad in Philly.
5. Archbishop Molloy- where is Lebron?
6. St. John the Baptist- good number 1, improved number 2. Can they get
5?
7. St. Joseph by-the-Sea- very talented, but all the talent is on the
track. No pure distance runners.
8. Bishop Kearney- another team with two good runners, looking for 5.
9. Notre Dame- if Davila gets in shape, at least three places upward.
10. St. Joseph Hill- soph threesome running together as pack; return of
Zaccariello moves them up further.
11. Holy Trinity- somewhat of a mystery.
12. St. Francis- another mystery team.
13. Christ the King- slight improvement in last week.
14. Nazareth- another slight improvement, but doesn't show in ratings.
Others are improving more.
15. Bishop Loughlin- if they decide to really compete at XC, they'd move
up quite a bit.

Villa starting slowly with third-place finish
at Wagner Invitational. Their
front three spread out. Surprise from St. Joseph Hill, which has
improved
due to senior Jen Zaccariello running her first varsity cross country
race,
and finishing sixth.
Rakibat Abiola, last year's CHSAA X-C champion, has transferred to
Tottenville HS, but apparently is not competing for the team.

There are four contenders for this year's CHSAA championship. St.
Anthony's
gets the nod, due to superior depth. If they can come up with one or two
front runners, they would be heavy favorites, and could make some waves
in
state competition. St. John Villa has the best three, but lost their top
two
freshmen, both to basketball. Melanie D'Ambrosi transferred to St.Joseph
Hill, and Lorelle Ricco is not running.
The third and fourth contenders, Archbishop Molloy and Sacred Heart,
could
easily move into the title contention if either of the top two falters.
Notre Dame, St. Francis, Kellenberg, and St. Joseph by-the-Sea appear to
be
a cut below Loughlin.
Spots 11-15 are real guesses, and Kearney, Mary Louis, St. Joseph Hill
appear to be in the best position to move up from last year.
There seems to be a drop-off after the first four. Bishop Loughlin has
talent, but they seem to be more track oriented. If they take cross
country
seriously, they could be a factor.
Individually, there are several contenders for the title. An unconfirmed
rumor has last year's cross country champ, Rakibat Abiola, transferring
from
St. Peter's to Tottenville. Reportedly, she will not compete for
Tottenville.
