Stoddart, always therePublished by
By Jack Pfeifer There were two New Yorkers in the women’s 400 hurdles, but this time it was Shevon Stoddart, not Dalilah Muhammad, who shined. Muhammad, the surprise silver medalist in the World Championships a year ago when she had a career season, struggled home in 7th place in 58.89. Muhammad, who has been off form this campaign, did not speak with the press after her race. Right there in a solid 4th, in 56.15, was the 31-year-old, Jamaican-born Shevon Stoddart, a graduate of Uniondale High School. “I have been pretty consistent this year,” Stoddart said. “I have a new coach this year” -- she now trains with Sheffield Elite in Los Angeles – “and that has really made a difference.” Stoddart has had a remarkably resilient career. This season marks the 13th consecutive year in which she has run 57 seconds or faster in the demanding IH. She has represented Jamaica in the PanAm Games, the Commonwealth Games and two Olympics, and she’s not done. “I’m going to our Trials (in June) to try for the Commonwealth Games team,” Stoddart said, “and I still want ’16. I’ve been to two Olympics already. Third time’s a charm.” More news
