The Apple Bank Hispanic Games rings in the new year at The Armory on Friday and Saturday, featuring another weekend of high-level high school indoor track and field.
New York state record holder Luke Beattie of Warwick Valley NY looks to improve his US#2 height of 17 feet, 1.25 inches in the boys pole vault. Beattie has gone over 17 feet twice this winter and both marks came at meets at The Armory. Sean Arms of Daniel Hand, who nearly matched the Connecticut state record of 16 feet at the Jim Mitchell Invitational, is another top entry.
Destiny Coleman of Wood MD returns to The Armory three weeks after clocking a US#2 time of 7.76 seconds in the girls 55 meters hurdles. The Ohio State commit is entered in the 55 hurdles and the 200.
Coleman will race Pennsylvania state Amirah Nesmith of Cheltenham in the 200 and All-American heptathlete D’Asia Duncan of Bloomfield CT in the 55 hurdles.
Charles Sullivan of Somers NY, Nike Indoor Nationals runner-up in Weight Throw, is looking for his first mark over 70 feet in weight throw this indoor season. The Wisconsin commit threw a season’s best 68-0.75 in his season opener on Dec. 7.
Jane Hickey of Urusline School NY, a 2:03 800 runner last spring, will step down in distance to the girls 400 against Breanne Barnett of Baldwin NY, winner of the gold 400 at U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic.
Samantha Benson-Tyler of Paul D Schreiber will go for her fourth of the season in the 1,500 meter racewalk, aiming to improve her US#1 time of 6:56.83.
Claudel Chery and Ryan Tuohy, the top two runners for the New York Federation cross country champion North Rockland, will make their season debuts in the boys mile. Kennan Byers of Randolph NJ, third at the New Jersey Meet of Champions in the 1,600 meters, is entered, too.
Ben Berman of Bronx High School of Science NY, second to Chery at the New York Federation cross country meet, is entered in the boys 2-mile. Berman ran at both Nike Cross Nationals and Brooks XC Championships.
Naomi Douglas of Fiorello H. LaGuardia NY, winner of the girls mile and 3,000 at JAMBAR Coaches Hall of Fame, is entered in the girls mile, taking on NXN competitor and 4:49 miler Maggie McCormick of Bay Shore NY, Malina Santee of Horace Greeley NY, Bridget Dunn of Tappan Zee NY and Marella Virmani of River Hill MD. Santee is also scheduled to appear in the 800, where she owns a personal best of 2:07.63.
Karil Arnold of Saint Johns College DC, who ran 1:49.39 in the 800 last outdoor season, is expected to make his season debut in the 800.
Brandon Thweatt of Baldwin NY, the U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic champion in the boys 55 hurdles in a personal best 7.52, headlines the boys 55 hurdles.
Jonathan Syzmanski of Chaminade and Connor Sullivan of Clarkstown South NY will go head-to-head in the boys shot put. Syzmanski won the shot put at the U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic, throwing 55-1.
Ma’siyah Branwer of Winslow Township NJ is the top entry in both the girls triple and long jump competitions.
Jenna Monaco of Dumont NJ looks to bounce back in the win column in the girls pole vault after finishing second at the U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic. Monaco is US#7 at 12-6.
