Hasty taking aim at a fast mile with the pros in NY By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Brodey Hasty of Brentwood, Tenn. is headed to The Armory in New York this weekend to test himself in a field of pros in the men’s mile at the Dr. Sander Invitational Hasty, a senior, ran a lifetime best of 4:01.75 in the mile in June. He will be in a mile field Saturday that includes Craig Engels of the Nike Oregon Project, Pat Casey of the Nike Oregon Track Club Elite and Brannon Kidder of the Brooks Beasts. LINEUP “I’ve been training to do that, so it’s definitely part of the goal,” Hasty said of his sub-four attempt. “I think I’m in OK shape.” Hasty said he got sick after the conclusion of the cross country season and took a little bit more time off than he might have wanted. Last weekend, he ran on a distance medley relay and also took third in the 1,000 meters at the Virginia Showcase. In the 1,000, he ran 2:27.25 and finished behind future Oregon teammate Josh Hoey (2:24.64) and Dalton Hengst (2:25.30). “I’m not sure I was completely ready for the change in pace, but I think I did that to get ready for this (weekend),” Hasty said. “I’m as prepared as I can be for this race.” The Armory has been the site of a few high-profile sub-four efforts by elite prep boys in recent years. Andrew Hunter broke Alan Webb’s national indoor record there in 2016 and went under the four-minute barrier twice in New York. Last year, David Principe Jr. ran in a race with professional men and ran 4:00.97 at the New Balance Games. Saturday's race will be Hasty's first experience with professionals. Last March on The Armory track, Hasty won the New Balance Nationals Indoor 2-mile when he ran 8:45.16. |
