Monroe-Woodbury Brings Back Five From Last Year's NXR New York Title Team By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Boys NXR New York Preview Monroe-Woodbury and Auburn represented New York at Nike Cross Nationals last year and finished 20th and 22nd in the championship race. A state that makes up its own region, and has a history of success, is simply not quite as competitive as it was in year's past. Monroe-Woodbury brings back five to form a senior-laden team that should be able to contend for New York supremacy as well as a return trip to Portland and a chance to perform better. The trio of Gavin Catherwood, Shane Golio and Devon Ryan is as good as any in New York this fall. Golio is also the highest placing returner to the regional meet and was third last year. There are no dominant teams in New York right now, and depth is an issue for even the best ones. So it will take some time to sort out who improved over the summer and who added impactful newcomers. With the New York Federation meet serving double duty as the NXR New York regional for the first time this year, it should be more competitive than it was in 2023. Not only will teams not have to press themselves through championship meets on the same Bowdoin Park course two weekends in a row, but the decision about whether to go the NXN or Foot Locker route has been eliminated since the qualifying meets are no longer on the same day. Tri-Valley Central's Van Furman, who won the New York Federation meet last year, is one of the top runners in the state this fall, along with Auburn junior Ryan Maher and Sutherland's William Tempest. 1. Monroe-Woodbury. The Crusaders opened their season by placing second on Saturday at the PTXC 15 at the Kutztown University farm course in Pennsylvania. Senior Gavin Catherwood led the way with a third-place finish. Monroe-Woodbury won the NXR New York title by two points last year and brings back five of its top six from that race. Senior Shane Golio, who was third at NXR NY, and senior Devon Ryan are part of a strong top three. Two more seniors, Vincent Costello and Ronaldo Rodriguez Perez, complete the top five. 2. Ithaca. Six of the top seven return from last year's team that finished fifth at the NXR New York regional, bringing the possibility of an NXN bid into focus. Seniors Noah Hilker and Riley Hubisz are the top returners. Senior Everett Shaw and junior twins Zoltan and Andor Nadasdy are important members of the pack. Ithaca was sixth at the New York Class A state finals and will have show improvement to get into contention for a nationals berth. 3. Saratoga Springs. The combination of senior Darren Pasek and junior Thomas Isenovski up front gives the Blue Streak two great building blocks. Pasek ran 9:04 and Isenovski 9:05 in the 3,200 meters last spring at the New York state track and field championships. Senior Owen Blaisdell is another important piece of the puzzle and ran 4:18.68 in the 1,600 meters. Those three are standouts and if the team can find two more to stay with them on the trails this fall, Saratoga Springs is a top-two contender at the NXR New York regional. Senior Othmane Kerroum and junior Joshua Nix are the likeliest to help them out based on spring track performances. Sophomores Brent Pasek and Lucas Miller are in the mix as well. 4. North Rockland. Juniors Ryan Tuohy and Claudel Chery are both potential sub-9 guys in the 3,200 meters this year and they give North Rockland a solid foundation. Tuohy, as the younger brother of three-time NXN champion Katelyn Tuohy, knows the blueprint for success. Sophomore James McCarron is a third young talent and seniors Devon Piccone and Daniel Affoumani solidify the top five. Depth may be an issue, but if these five stay healthy, the Red Raiders should be a contender. 5. Xavier. The Knights, who compete in the CHSAA, return five seniors who could build something special this season at the all-boys Jesuit prep school on 16th Street in Manhattan. Aaron Gill was the best of the bunch last year and is at the front of a pack that includes D'Angelo Brown, Hau Son Wong, Axel Teiling and Reid Baynes. Those five come back from a team that finished seventh at NXR New York and fifth at the New York Federation meet. WATCHLIST More news |
