NXR Heartland Champion Wayzata Takes Over At No. 1 As Many Other Top Teams Queue For Post-Season Meets By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Wayzata MN's performance on Sunday in cold, windy, snowy conditions at NXR Heartland was more than a dominant effort in the region. Maddie Gullickson and her teammates put together the best result of any team in the country so far this year. Coming out of the Minnesota state meet, I'd have moved Wayzata to No. 2 nationally, but that was a regional rankings week. Preseason No. 1 Lone Peak UT brings back the bulk of its roster from a podium finish last year at Nike Cross Nationals. And it's very possible that Lone Peak is gearing up to show out at NXR Southwest, and later, possibly in Portland. But there is no getting around Wayzata's recent work. From one-to-five, no team has matched the Trojans. It goes against the grain to pick a non-high altitude team after the results of the past two years at nationals. But Wayzata has championship pedigree (2013) and this year's team could be its best ever. There are seven more NXR meets plus the California state meet on deck, where teams will continue to peak and perhaps surpass Wayzata. But only a few could possibly do that. The NXR Midwest on Sunday features a matchup between Michigan champion and No. 6 Ann Arbor Pioneer, led by Natasza Dudek, and Indiana champion and No. 8 Carmel. Romeo of Michigan also had a strong state meet and is No. 13, and Barrington, the Illinois 3A champ, is No. 20. At NXR Northwest this weekend, No. 14 Rocky Mountain ID will look to make its return to NXN despite graduating three of last year's top five. Sehome of Washington will aim to become the first team from the Evergreen state to reach NXN since North Central of Spokane in 2019. The Top 30 More news |
