Niwot's Championship Repeat Never In Question At NXN, Colorado Champs End Season At No. 1

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Niwot's march to a second straight national championship in boys cross country at Nike Cross Nationals turned out to be one of the safest bets in a meet where the results can go a little bit haywire.

The Colorado champions from Boulder extended the Southwest region's streak to three straight years and 2023 champion Herriman UT was second and 2024 runner-up American Fork UT was fifth.

It was the combination of junior Quinn Sullivan and senior Hunter Robbie placing fifth and sixth that paved the way to an historic victory and record low points total of 61. Niwot had the best No. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 runners in the meet last Saturday at Glendoveer Golf Course.

The group, which included Keeton Ryder (33rd), Jude Ritzenhein (40th), Gabriel Marshall (65th), Garrett Sherrard (94th) and Rocco Culpepper (133rd), will go into history as one of the best teams of all-time.

Seventh man Culpepper qualified individually for the Brooks XC Championships on Saturday in San Diego. How's that for depth?

In recent memory, only the Newbury Park boys from 2021 are better.

The NXN order of finish sets most of the final Top 30, but there is also some room for teams that didn't advance out of their regional meets despite having fantastic seasons and national-caliber lineups.

Some of the next-best teams in strong regions have a spot on the list because of how well the region performed at NXN. The strength of Christian Brothers Academy (third) and Haddonfield Memorial (ninth) made a valid argument for Northeast third-place team State College PA.

California's performance, with four teams placing 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th, was bit of a mystery. In particular, Jesuit (Carmichael) finished far lower than expected.

Meanwhile, Sioux Falls Lincoln SD had a tremendous showing to take sixth. Junior Tyus Needles was 32nd overall and Miles Lechtenberg was 35th.

Interesting there is no further commentary about Herriman and the fact that most everyone didn't predict that they would be on the podium for the third year in a row. Lots of talk about teams that didn't even make it to the podium - even close to it. Herriman proved that they have depth and should never be discounted.
